Goal 2. Understand the essential nature of information management and its relevance to society
2a. Describe various definitions and concepts of information
Artifact: Data structures-Invoice Management System
Course: IM 704 Data Modeling and Representation
In this course I learned the importance of how information is represented can impact its relevance. Understanding whether data is structured or unstructured, controlled by vocabularies or free from, can determine how information is accessed and disseminated. These important concepts and definitions, became transparent as I created as part of an assignment a model for an Invoice Management system. I learned a variety of internal and external data structures, how data is transmitted between systems, and the impact of information representation to its users. This course allowed me to grasp the concept of Information management and the relationship between collecting and organizing data in terms of a database as a data structure.
2b. Articulate the various lifecycle stages for data, metadata, and information
Artifact: Online grocery app Assignment.
Course: IM 703 Information Architecture
As part of the IM 703 course, we were tasked to create an online grocery navigation app in several stages. The goal was to create a concept and structure navigation model that incorporated the full lifecycle stages for data, metadata, and information. The development of this application gave me the opportunity based on a user-center design to learn about mental models, empathy charts, conceptual models, metadata schemas, and taxonomy. In addition, the series of exercises that were part of the assignments provided me with practical experience in evaluating and developing information architectures, particularly reflecting the organization’s mission, products, and values.
2c. Articulate the context of information management and the social, ethical, cultural, legal, and economic factors that impact information systems.
Artifact: Case Study Netflix -
Coourse: IM 701 Information in Society, Organizations, and Cultures
This case study is a review of Netflix’s information management leadership and their social, economic, cultural and ethical impact on information management. In this document I examine several components related to information management practices, information management issues, goals, services, and I provide a set of recommended strategies that will improve operations and services. Such recommendations are related to increasing their online setting for a global market; foreign operations should maintain a local and skilled personnel for those markets; have a strategic plan to address potential political and social unrest; rather than compete with iTunes, strengthen its partnerships with Apple; partner with multi-channel television providers, and leverage mobile 3D technology across multiple platforms such as Oculus.
