Goal 1. Develop a professional identity

1a. Describe the historical foundations of information technologies and apply this knowledge to anticipate and plan for future developments

Artifact: Internet of Things

Course: IM 701 Information in Society, Organizations, and Cultures

This assignment provided me with the opportunity to address Internet of Things (IoTs) technology trends that impact Information management practices from a historical perspective. In the loTs presentation, I addressed several trends that currently affect our society and future issue predictions within these trends.

In my presentation, I make a clear connection between concepts that change over time such as, information being viewed as a thing then evolving to thinking machines.  I also make predictions about how the Internet of Things will drastically impact many aspects of information management practices and social and global economies. During my research and analysis for this presentation, I became more aware of and gained a better understanding of the drastic changes technology will have in our society, particularly when it comes to private privacy, national security, and legal protection.

1b. Identify the core values and ethics of the information professions

Artifact: Research Paper -How Technology influenced the communication of a generation.

Course: LIS 791 Organizational and Multicultural Communication.

My research paper addresses intercultural communication and the side effects that are created by the influence of technology.  Communication across generational differences has always been a challenge, however, with new communication technology methods, these differences have been magnified. Depending on how Information professionals perceive and use technology, the meaning of their message might be misunderstood, particularly when this communication is intercultural via social media or via text.  This is particularly important, once we understand how Millennials, GenXers, Gen Z, and newer generations tend to communicate between their own group, their technology preference and the differences in what they feel is considered private and/or ethical. Nonetheless, technology has given us the power to communicate across the globe, strengthened relations and has played a significant role in promoting development and progress for most societies.

1d. Participate in professional activities and associations

Artifact: Information Architecture Plan

Course: IM 703 Information Architecture

While taking this course, I had the opportunity to work with my current organization to review and present a recommendation for a strategic plan for their distance education division. During my consultation with the different areas that take part in distance education I was able to apply the concepts learned in the MSIM program. As part of the experience with this project, I had direct conversations with the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs which became part of my research, and ultimately part of my Information Architecture plan for the organization. As part of my Information Architecture Plan, I introduced the e-campus concept as a recommendation for my organization, and I presented a strategy for the e-campus concept and a vision plan for its expansion.
